That said, I have to add something else. I'm not at all sure that
a narrow code like the one I just described would do a lot of good.
I agree that there is some underlying racism on campus;
but I don't think a narrow code would eliminate it or even reduce
it significantly. That's an empirical question that requires study.
A narrow code might get rid of some of the most obnoxious and harmful behavior. I agree. But if you really want to deal effectively with racist attitudes, you need something else. Frankly, I think that it's that "something else" that we ought to be talking about. The code is mainly cosmetic. We need to talk about substantive problems, not words and symbols.
