I share some of your concern. The only code I'm willing to consider supporting is one that prohibits face to face verbal harassment of specific individuals that clearly interferes with their ability to go about the normal business of students at the university.

That said, I have to add something else. I'm not at all sure that a narrow code like the one I just described would do a lot of good. I agree that there is some underlying racism on campus; but I don't think a narrow code would eliminate it or even reduce it significantly. That's an empirical question that requires study.

A narrow code might get rid of some of the most obnoxious and harmful behavior. I agree. But if you really want to deal effectively with racist attitudes, you need something else. Frankly, I think that it's that "something else" that we ought to be talking about. The code is mainly cosmetic. We need to talk about substantive problems, not words and symbols.
