I think they did the right thing too. But I especially like the
part of the policy you didn't quote. The new code also forbids
Sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and verbal or physical conduct that stigmatizes or victimizes an individual on the basis of sex or sexual orientation where such behavior:
a. Involves an express or implied threat to an individual's academic efforts, employment, participation in University sponsored extra-curricular activities, or personal safety; or
b. Has the purpose or reasonably foreseeable effect of interfering with an individual's academic efforts, employment, participation in University sponsored extra-curricular activities, or personal safety; or
c. Creates an intimidating, hostile, or demeaning environment for educational pursuits, employment, or participation in University sponsored extra-curricular activities.
Racist assault through language is not the only problem on campus. In fact, verbal assaults on women are probably more common. They are both harmful to their victims and destructive of the educational environment. Those are two good reasons to punish them.
