Why Free Speech?

It seems to me that one of the best reasons for adopting a broad or liberal policy on freedom of expression is that otherwise we are giving the government the right to restrict certain kinds of speech. And if we do that, we run the risk that the area of restricted speech will gradually get larger and larger.

To put it the other way around, if we do give the government the power to restrict some sort of speech - say, left wing ideas or right wing ideas or whatever - we are assuming that we can control that power and keep it from expanding and including ideas that we want expressed. I doubt that we can control it, and I don't want to find out.
