I'll go along with you but I want to make several points.
- I think the distinction between historically oppressed and
non-oppressed groups is crucial for a suitable definition of hate
speech.
- Your definition does not include vicious speech directed at
women as women. That kind of speech - and the whole pornographic
assault on women - has to be addressed.
- Our issue is not entirely a free speech issue. If we define
it solely as a free speech issue we get into endless debates over
the First Amendment. The defenders of free speech become the good
guys who are defending freedom and people like me become the bad
guys who want to gag everyone.
These points have to be addressed or we're not really going to
get anywhere. I'm giving you fair warning that I will be raising
them again.
