I'd like to quality something you said. It may well be that Rawls doesn't believe in metaphysical or theological foundations for ethics or for justice. But he also doesn't believe that his theory requires anyone to reject those foundations. What he wants to offer is a theory that allows people to believe in theological or other foundations while also accepting his theory.
