The Original Position

I know that we aren't supposed to be evaluating Rawls right now, but this is one idea of his that I think is really terrific. There are lots of things I don't like, but here I think he's on to something.

Think of it -- everywhere you look in history one group of people has supported rules of so-called justice that benefit themselves and take advantage of others. The rich have done it to the poor. Men have done it to women. Whites have done it to blacks. Heterosexuals have done it to homosexuals.

But in Rawls' original position nobody can do this because they don't know whether they will be rich or poor, male or female, white or black, straight or gay. I love it.
