Let's
be clear about one thing, though. As I understand it, Rawls is not
claiming that people ever sat down in the original position and made a
social contract. His contract is entirely hypothetical. It's a thought
experiment.
He does say that we can imagine ourselves in the original
position at any time if we can make certain assumptions such as
certain restrictions on what we know about our real situation. That
sounds a little naive to me, but that's what he says.
