OK. Fair enough. There are cases in which a more or less free market has done the job required by rectification -- especially if we are talking about descendants as opposed to the specific people who suffered injustice.

But there are also cases in which the market has not worked very well. African Americans are one such case. For them the market program of rectification has failed and something else is needed. The only serious alternative is a federally planned program.

And let me add one more comment. Sometimes people say that we can't get into reparations because there's no telling where it would end. I would agree that we cannot make up for all of the injustices of the past and all their consequences. But that doesn't mean we should do nothing. We can work on the worst cases.
