The Holy Grail of libertarians is a "reason
based" system of ethics that can establish strong individual
rights -- rights so strong that we can ignore the consequences of recognizing those rights for the poor and others who do not do well in a free market
economy. In other words, what libertarians want most is a
deontological ethics based on reason. They're all Kantians at heart.
It's an illusion. There is no such "reason based" system of ethics. Libertarianism, in its economic aspect, is simply the projection of the American small businessman's view of the world onto the moral universe.
