It's not entirely fair to contrast the libertarian emphasis on freedom with an emphasis on equality. We have to be more specific.
Libertarians do place the greatest value on freedom, but they also value equality. They stress that people have EQUAL rights not to be
interfered with and that they deserve EQUAL protection for those rights from their government. Thus they have incorporated a concern with equality into their ideas about freedom.
Left liberals and welfare state liberals cannot claim to be the only ones who value equality. The difference is that they value equality of condition or equality of outcomes rather than
the equal protection of equal non-interference rights.
