Alasdair
MacIntyre has said that traditional western moral theory (including
theories of justice) has simply collapsed. We can see the evidence all around us. The language of our debates is littered with phrases that are left over from traditional theories. We speak of rights, but there is no agreement
on any theory or rights. We speak of good and evil, but there is no agreement on any theory of the good. Sometimes we even speak of the common good or natural law or a reasonable basis for morals. But, again, there is no agreement on any theory.
The theories are gone and the catch phrases, the buzz words, remain. That's it. That's all we have.
