There
is another reason that ethical relativism seems plausible to a lot of
people. Different groups in society have different experiences that
strongly affect their moral judgments and principles.
To take an obvious example: Slavery and racial discrimination may
have seemed defensible and even good to many whites who benefited from
them. To African Americans they seemed morally wrong. One reason that
these groups take different moral positions is that their
experience is different.
Ethical relativism accepts the reality of these different
experiences and can allow us to explain the different moral principles
and judgments that people with different experiences make.
