It is important to distinguish two versions of the diversity argument. The first version argues that more blacks and women (and perhaps others) ought to be brought into professional schools and onto university faculties because members of these groups were unjustly excluded. If strong affirmative action plans are involved, this is usually a compensatory argument.
The second version argues that more blacks and women (and perhaps others) ought to be brought into these positions because of the good consequences for other students, for the institutions involved, for groups requiring professional services, and so on. Our speakers are discussing the second version.
