If John is right about the way hiring is actually done, and if there is a right to be hired on the basis of competence (for many or most jobs), then it seems to follow that there has been massive injustice in the job market for a long time.
The injustice would include not just cases of racial discrimination, but countless cases in which a company hired from within rather than searching for the most competent person, cases in which jobs have gone to family members, and so on.
Is this true? If so, is massive compensation due to millions of people?
