All of us believe that slavery was and is morally wrong. But WHY was it wrong?

What is the best answer you can think of? Some people consider slavery to be against God's will. Others believe that it violates individual human rights (perhaps a right to liberty). Still others believe that slavery is wrong because in the long run it does not maximize human welfare.

If you believe that slavery violates human rights, you need a theory of rights to support your claim. If you believe that slavery does not maximize human welfare, you are making an empirical claim. How would you support it?
