The compensation argument is not the only way that supporters try to justify strong affirmative action. There are other arguments that stress other kinds of results. For example, someone might claim that strong affirmative action programs decrease poverty or inequality, that they bring more people with more skills into the labor force, that they help employers to market their products to a more diverse population, or that they help professional schools provide for the needs of groups that are underserved. Some of these arguments will come up again in the section on Utility and Diversity. There are, of course, critics of these arguments. You will encounter some of their views too.
