I think it's easier to understand if we put it in terms of money.

We ordinarily say that someone can buy whatever he wants with his own money. But there is a qualification that we all accept, even though we seldom mention it. You can buy what you want UNLESS there is something morally wrong with the way in which you came to have the money. If you got the money from your uncle the drug king, it may be taken away from you entirely.

This sort of thing is always true. The beneficiaries of racial injustice have their advantages in the job market in part because of past discrimination. This allows us to place restrictions on the use of those advantages.
