I think most white people have a tendency to exaggerate the number of strong affirmative action programs and the number of blacks involved.
The real danger is that affirmative action will be done so half-heartedly that only a few blacks will benefit and the great majority will be left without even the weakest programs. But whites see a few blacks in prominent positions and say to themselves "Well, I guess we solved that problem. No more discrimination around here. Look, there's even a black guy on the Supreme Court."
