Four versions of a principle of compensation have been put on the table: the "narrow" version, the "liberal" version, the "super-liberal" version, and the "group" version. As you might expect, the narrow version allows the smallest number of blacks to receive compensation and the group version allows the largest. Fred favors the narrow version while Ann favors the super-liberal version. Malik sees Ann's view as too individualistic. He would prefer to see whites recognize a group responsibility and for blacks to take control of reparations.
Everyone agrees that injustice sometimes requires compensation. Everyone does not agree on who deserves compensation, why they deserve it, what form it should take, and who should pay the costs.
