And there's another problem that you're ignoring. You are talking about putting in place a system of racial classifications and preferences in order to carry out a broad program of compensation. You say you believe in a color-blind society as a goal, but not right now because the effects of the past are still with us. It may not work out as you think.
The classifications and preferences you're talking about are like taxes. Once they're in place, they will have a permanent political base and a new government bureaucracy to administer them. It may be politically impossible to phase them out. We're going to be stuck with a new kind of apartheid, a new Jim Crow system created by the very people who hated the old system the most.
