So it looks like we have three different levels of analysis for thinking about compensation: the individual, the family, and the larger group.

Ann and Fred use an individualistic analysis. They want to show that harm was done to individuals before they are compensated. Ann uses the idea of "indirect" harm to bring in more people.

Malik wants to use a large group analysis. His model is the harm done to the Native American tribes. I'm suggesting the possibility of a third level between these two that uses family members as ethical stand-ins or proxies for one another.
