I believe that injustice sometimes requires compensation. I don't want you to get me wrong on that. Conservatives believe strongly in the rule of law. But I just want to point out that when you start talking about compensating people for the wrongs of the past, you may be opening up Pandora's box. Were the American Indians treated fairly? Probably not. What about the Irish or Jewish immigrants? What about the whites who worked in sweat shops or dangerous factories? Do all of these people have justified claims to compensation? I honestly don't know. But if you open one case, you should open them all. Does your philosophy tell you what to do in all these cases? If not, then maybe we shouldn't open the box.
