You guys are beating up on the merit system. But if there is no right to be chosen on the basis of merit (defined in terms of qualifications needed to do a job well) then don't you have a problem?

Put it this way: If there is no right to be chosen on the basis of merit, why was it wrong to discriminate against blacks in, say, 1940? If you can't answer that, then there is no injustice to be compensated.

I'm not saying discrimination was OK, but I'm asking you to tell me why it was wrong now that you've objected to a right to be chosen on the basis of competence or merit.
