When strong affirmative action is discussed, it is usually contrasted with the "rule of merit" or the "merit system."
The idea behind the merit system is that the best qualified person should be chosen for a particular job. When an affirmative action policy results in a less qualified black applicant being chosen, the white applicant is treated unjustly.
Furthermore, the employer and everyone else suffers because the black employee will be less productive. Of course, if the black applicant is the best qualified, then hiring the white applicant is unfair and inefficient. It works both ways.
