Lomasky does not give the same moral status to fetuses as he does to infants. Although a fetus, like an infant, will become a project pursuer, he does not believe that others have the same reason for acknowledging its status as a bearer of rights.

Lomasky argues that for other projects pursuers to have good reasons to acknowledge the merit of non-pursuers, they (the project pursuers) must be able to enter into a network of social relationships with them (the non-pursuers). They can do so with an infant, but not with a fetus. Therefore the fetus remains outside the moral community, and to abort it does not violate its right to life.
