It is common to say that the doctor should be punished but the mother has "suffered enough." If you take this view, consider how seldom we accept this justification for letting someone off without punishment. If, for example, a husband kills his wife in a blind rage and now feels inconsolable, few of us feel that he should go unpunished. Furthermore, there are women who feel no great anguish after an abortion. Should they be given a harsh sentence? If you choose to make some abortions illegal, you must determine a punishment that is consistent with the legal penalties for other crimes.
