Davis points out a number of differences between abortion and clear-cut cases of self-defense:

  • The fetus is neither an aggressor nor an assailant. There is no wrong doing on the part of the fetus.
  • The woman may have voluntarily become pregnant. She may bear some responsibility for her predicament.
  • In most cases the woman does not perform the abortion on herself. She contracts for a third party to perform it.
