It is sometimes said that anti-abortion legislation would be unconstitutional because its advocates are religiously motivated or because its support derives from organized religion. It is often pointed out that the Catholic Church has established groups around the country to work against abortion on many levels.

If you wish to make this argument, you should consider that there have often been churches involved very directly in American politics. Is civil rights legislation flawed because many black churches and church leaders advocated it or contributed money? Is there a relevant difference between their activity and what the Catholic Church has done in the case of abortion? If so, what is it?
