Most of us have the feeling that an embryo or fetus is a very valuable being. As this argument stresses, it is the only being we know of that is a potential person. But what sort of value does it have? People have intrinsic value (i.e., value for what they are rather than what they are a means to). Is this the sort of value an embryo has? Or is its value entirely in what it leads to or becomes? Is it intrinsic or extrinsic? How would you argue one way or another? Is this distinction, if it can be made clear, relevant to arguments about abortion? Do we attribute rights only to beings that have intrinsic value? Can a being that lacks consciousness have intrinsic value? Or does it have value only because it will become a being with consciousness and other relevant attributes?
