Abortion Rights And Wrongs

What Rights?

You believe that either the embryo or the fetus or both can have rights. This conclusion is usually part of an argument that places strict limits on the acceptability of abortion. It is important to realize, however, that very little follows immediately from this conclusion. Keep the following in mind:

  • Even if the embryo or fetus can have rights, it doesn't follow that it has any specific right, including a right to life in any sense or the right to the support of its mother's body.
  • If the embryo or fetus does have a right to life, it still doesn't follow that it has a right to its mother's body. That depends on just exactly what a right to life includes.
Only further argument can establish those conclusions.
