If you want to defend Joyce's argument, consider how you would reply to some of the questions it raises. For example, Although it is true that certain capabilities make a human embryo
different from a rabbit embryo, why should we define personhood
in terms of those capabilities rather than developed functions?
Our question wasn't "What makes a human embryo different?"
It was "How should we define 'person'?"
On Joyce's second point, we need to ask why a thing cannot become something essentially different. How do we know that this is true? And how do we decide what counts as "essentially different"? Can you defend Joyce's view?
