Abortion Rights And Wrongs

Is It the Best Thing?

Even in the cases where you believe that abortion is morally permissible, it is still possible to ask whether it is the best thing to do. (Many permissible actions are far from the best we can do. Indeed, we often think less of people who insist upon their rights when they are harming others.)

  • If the fetus is a person, or even if it is not, might it not be better to allow it to live and develop? Assume that it has a good chance for a decent life.

  • If the fetus would suffer in the abortion, isn't it usually better to minimize suffering?

How would you reply to someone who agreed that a woman has a right to abort but also claimed that it was usually better not to do so? How important is it to do the best or at least the better thing?
