The theory of natural law has its critics. It is by no means clear that reason can discover which actions are intrinsically immoral. But even if we ignore this aspect of the theory, there are still problems:

  • One version of the argument requires that the embryo/fetus be a person with the same moral status as an adult.
  • Another version of the argument requires that we know when the embryo/fetus is ensouled.
  • The argument assumes that we can formulate a morally relevant distinction between direct and indirect action.
  • The argument assumes that it is always wrong to directly kill innocent people.
