While opponents of abortion usually focus on the rights and welfare
of the embryo/fetus, advocates of choice usually focus on the rights
and welfare of the mother.
The capacity to bear children is obviously unique to women. Some
writers have argued that if women are to have the same opportunities
in life as men, they must be able to control when and how many
children they have. In short, they argue that control over her
capacity to have children is a prerequisite for a woman's other
liberties and activities.
But exactly what is one entitled to do in order to control one's fertility? What does the right to control one's body imply and how strong is it? How, if at all, is it limited?
