Embryos and Fetuses | ||
CONTINUE ON | |||
If you believe that the embryo is not a person but the older fetus
is, you must explain why. There are various physical differences
between embryos and fetuses. An older fetus looks more like a
baby, it has a central nervous system, it can move its limbs,
etc. Why should any of these things make a difference? Or is there
something else that matters?
Suppose that in the last months of gestation the fetus looked
very different from a baby (and took the form of an infant only
after birth). Would that make a difference? Why should any physical
features by themselves make the older fetus a person?
Are there similarities between a late term fetus and an infant that are morally significant? Can they provide a key?
